president clinton introduced a package of gun control proposals. if you look back at the coverage of those proposals that president clinton introduced, a lot of the coverage involved this infighting that you're talking about. gun control groups, far left saying, we don't like these packages from the democratic president because they don't go far enough. they are not banning handguns. they are not taking people's guns away. anything he's going to do, such as closing the gun control loophole, doesn't go far enough to satisfy us. and that kind of hinfighting helped keep the assault weapons ban from being removed in 2004. it was really an impediment to progress for the movement. >> people on that site moderating their rhetoric and getting more unified about exactly what they think they can try to get done. it's not like the nra is backing off. if anything, they and their supporters have gone further to the right, haven't they? >> people may have seen the commercial that aired during the super bowl by mayors against illegal guns, mike bloomberg's group, that showed that group of wayne lapierre

universally condemned speech of recent times was bill clinton's keynote speech at the 1988 democratic convention when he got a big round of applause when he said in conclusion. he did okay. they nominated him next time and he went on to a pretty successful political career. let's not forget that last time the person who gave the response was paul ryan, who went on to win the republican vice presidential nomination. if you do well, there are opportunities. if you do badly, it's a difficult thing to recover from, but not impossible as bill clinton showed. >> rubio has some ground to catch up. he's running behind at least paul ryan. when it comes in popularity and for those who want to say paul ryan's out of it because he was on the losing team obviously the polling doesn't seem it. very likely to support for the republican nomination in 2016. 75% say chris christie is at 59. in this sense, there is a big opportunity for marco rubio, right? >> i think it's a great opportunity and i think it's a blessing. it's a good thing for the republican party and i'm a democrat. i don't know if you k

from texas who has stumbled a bit. rubio has been more of the barack obama and hillary clinton model. he's been careful about how he uses that star power and also his opponent is probably paul ryan, who i thought gave a very weak speech at the national review institute. rubio is coming with new ideas and new ideas that will move his party to the center. outstanding choice. >> on immigration reform, he's joined forces with some democrats, comprehensive immigration reform. senator vitter of louisiana calls him naive. so he's getting some criticism from the right. >> naive for some means hopeful and optimistic for others and i think that's what some republicans have been lacking. we've been painted in the times, rightly so, that we're only the guys in suits and business men in an old world. are we the party for everyone? do we have an offer of better way for everyone in the united states, not just our alleged 53% which we didn't even have? and rubio, i think, speaks to that. >> he's got to be really careful in giving that republican response to the president's state of the union address
